Durable Stucco Cladding Systems
Sep, 2025
While building paper has been a traditional choice for many years and is still code-compliant in some applications, DuPont™ Tyvek® offers a more reliable, and durable solution for modern stucco wall systems.
Both products serve as a water-resistive barrier (WRB), but Tyvek® offers several key advantages that make it a preferred choice when designing and building above code minimum.
Superior Water Management and Drainage
• Engineered for Drainage: Products like DuPont™ Tyvek® StuccoWrap® are specifically designed with a textured, grooved surface. This unique feature creates a small drainage plane between the WRB and the stucco, allowing any incidental moisture that gets behind the stucco to drain away efficiently. This is a significant improvement over traditional building paper, which often wrinkles to create some drainage, but not in a consistent or controlled manner.
• Non-Absorbent Material: Tyvek is a synthetic, non-woven polyolefin material that does not absorb water. In contrast, asphalt-impregnated building paper is made of cellulose fibers, which can absorb water. This is problematic because moisture retained in the wall system can lead to problems like mold growth. Tyvek helps guide water out of the wall and promotes rapid drying.
• Protection for Curing Stucco: Stucco requires a specific amount of moisture to cure properly and achieve its full strength. Tyvek’s non-absorbent nature means it won’t pull water out of the wet stucco mixture, which can happen with building paper. This helps ensure a more complete and uniform cure, leading to a stronger, more crack-resistant stucco finish.
“60 Minutes” – The promised performance on how long the product will hold out water

The benefits of improved water resistance, drainage, superior durability, and better moisture management make Tyvek the preferred choice for long-term building performance and a reduced risk of moisture-related issues.
